Welcome to the Biologics Research Center (BRC) Cell & Gene Therapy unit at Novartis Biomedical Research in San Diego, California. Our team is dedicated to advancing medical research and developing innovative therapies that can make a difference in patients’ lives. We are currently seeking a motivated Research Scientist II to join us in our mission to explore early-stage recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy.
About the Role:
Location: San Diego, CA (On-site position)
The Biologics Research Center (BRC) Cell & Gene Therapy unit focuses on creating new modalities that address complex biology and facilitate the development of advanced biotherapeutics, siRNAs, and cell & gene therapies. Collaborating with various teams within BRC and Disease Areas, our Cell & Gene Therapy unit specializes in viral engineering in AAV gene therapy to bring about transformative medicines.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Perform various purification processes for manufacturing AAV gene therapy vectors.
- Conduct experiments to evaluate and enhance technology for next-generation capsids.
- Collaborate with different teams within the organization to drive innovation.
- Assist in advancing pipeline programs into clinical phases.
- Prepare protocols, reports, and maintain accurate documentation.
This position is based in San Diego, CA and cannot be performed remotely.

Role Requirements
•Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or related technical field with 3+ years of lab related experience or Master’s with a minimum 1 year lab related experience.
•Previous experience with biotech/biopharmaceutical purification processes such as chromatographic separation, depth filtration, tangential flow filtration, adventitious viral clearance, or impurity clearance.
•Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills
•Strong organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills with attention to details
Desired Requirements:
•Knowledge in viral gene therapy and previous experience with viral vector process development is preferred
