Position: Intern, Cell Biology – Cell cycle-dependent lysosome dynamics (MS/PhD)

Position Description:
Calico is seeking an intern to join the Gottschling Lab. To succeed, you will need to be an enthusiastic team player, detail-oriented, extremely organized and comfortable working on complex problems. In this position you will study the dynamics of the lysosome in mammalian cell lines. The successful candidate will use live cell microscopy and immunofluorescence to characterize pH regulation in the lysosome during the mitotic cell cycle, and during cell cycle exit upon differentiation.
Responsibilities:
- Generate mammalian cell lines expressing recently developed fluorescent reporters and establish conditions for time resolved, high content microscopy
- Characterize the dynamics of lysosomal pH in different cell cycle stages and cellular states
- Characterize cellular signaling pathways and regulatory principles previously implicated in lysosomal dynamics
Position Requirements:
- Currently pursuing a Master’s (MS) or PhD or degree in Cell Biology, Biochemistry or a related field
- Experience with mammalian tissue culture including the generation of cell lines using viral vectors
- Experience with wide field microscopy, ideally with time-lapse analysis
- Detail-oriented and organized
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Self-motivated with a “can-do” attitude
- Flexible, able to respond quickly to shifting priorities and able to multitask
- Available to work for the summer months in person at our location in South San Francisco, CA
