About the Role

We are seeking a Scientist – Microbial Expression Sciences (MES) to join our Microbial Expression Sciences team at the UCB Research & Development campus in Slough, UK. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing, optimizing, and troubleshooting microbial processes at lab and pilot scales to ensure scalability and quality.

Who You’ll Work With

You will collaborate with a dynamic and high-performing team, working closely with colleagues across departments to support the development of innovative recombinant protein processes and plasmid production.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform microbial process optimization and development experiments from 250 mL to 200 L scale.
  • Address scale-up challenges and establish robust processes for tech transfer to manufacturing.
  • Analyze experimental data and present results to your manager, team, and internal stakeholders.
  • Work independently and collaboratively to achieve team objectives.
  • Provide technical expertise in upstream processing to internal customers.
  • Document work, including designing experiments, writing protocols, and updating procedures.

What We’re Looking For

For this role, we are looking for someone with:

  • Demonstrated expertise in lab and pilot-scale microbial process development.
  • Experience managing and interpreting large datasets, as well as writing scientific reports.
  • Strong ability to design experiments, interpret data, and propose actionable next steps.
  • Knowledge of data management tools and concepts.
  • Skills in authoring accurate protocols, reports, and SOPs.
  • Solid understanding of E. coli physiology (preferred but not required).
