Post-Undergraduate Internship – Anaerobic Digestion Experimentation

Job Description

An undergraduate student is needed in NREL’s Microbiology and Biochemistry Center to carry out routine anaerobic digestion sampling and setup of experiments. The student will be responsible for timely sampling and organizing large numbers of biomass samples. The student will also aid with setup of anaerobic digestion experiments and coordinating with the sample analysis. Sample analysis includes making pH and biogas volume measurements, collection and filtration of digestate for HPLC analysis, preparative centrifugation of cultures, and colorimetric analysis of volatile fatty acids. Additional duties may be performed by an exceptional candidate, such as running SDS-PAGE gels and western blots, BCA protein concentration assays, HPLC and GC sample analysis, as well as preparing common lab buffers or other reagents. Much of this work is carried out in an anaerobic glove box so good dexterity is required. Candidates should also be able to handle the strong odors associated with anaerobic microbiology.

This is a year-round position with flexible hours, averaging 20-30 hours/week. Preference will be given to well-qualified seniors in undergraduate programs, or recent graduates in their first year after undergraduate completion.

Basic Qualifications

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • The student must be focused and organized.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, is required.
  • A basic understanding of biology/microbiology is required.
  • Chemistry and/or Biology laboratory classes are required, with spectroscopy experience being very useful.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and strong communication skills are critical.

Preferred Qualifications

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Annual Salary Range: $31,600 – $50,600

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

NREL employees may be eligible for but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement-based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
