THE POSITION
2024 Fall Intern – Translational Medicine
Department Summary
The Department of Translational Medicine leads biomarker discovery and development efforts for programs in Early Stage Research through Phase III clinical trials.
We use relevant pharmacodynamic biomarkers to evaluate target-engagement and mechanism of action of candidate therapies as well as prognostic biomarkers to guide patient selection. Our department is responsible for developing biomarker strategies, designing and implementing biomarker assays, and interpreting biomarker results.
Biomarker team leaders within the department provide scientific leadership on biomarkers for clinical trials ranging from early proof-of-concept through global Phase III. We are currently seeking a highly-motivated intern to provide computational support on clinical development projects in fibrosis.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, California.
Key Responsibilities
- The successful candidate will partner closely with Genentech Computational Sciences (gCS) to support early and late stage fibrosis programs and core disease areas.
- Candidates will support the data analysis of multi-omic data and biomarker data from various clinical studies or publicly available datasets to identify pathway-specific genes and gene signatures. Candidates with experience in data mining, bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq analysis will be given preference.
- Effective written and verbal communication is essential, along with a strong ability to form close partnerships with key functions including Research, Clinical Sciences, Biostatistics, and Bioinformatics.
Program Highlights
- Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

Who You Are
Education:
- Current graduate students (MS or PhD) who are available to work full time for the duration of the internship.
- Preferred candidates will have prior Bioinformatics experience (omics, pathway, network analysis, etc.) with good programming skills in Python or R and/or prior experience in the study of cellular/molecular pathways that contribute to disease.
- Candidate must demonstrate a high level of independence and be able to develop hypotheses and direct analysis plans.
- Strong writing and communication skills and demonstrated success working on cross-functional research or clinical project teams is preferred.
Preferred majors:
- Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Data Science, or relevant engineering or scientific field

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
