THE POSITION
2024 Summer Intern – Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) and Computational Sciences (gCS) – Computational Biology and Translation
Department Summary
The Department of Computational Biology and Translation (CBT) of gRED Computational Sciences (gCS) is part of Genentech’s Research and Early Development (gRED) organization. The Digital Pathology and Oncology Biomarker Data Science Team, within the Department of CBT of gRED gCS, collaborates closely with diverse groups. These internal teams are involved in various stages of our drug development pipeline, ranging from preclinical safety assessment to clinical translational medicine.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing deep learning models with imaging and biomedical data obtained from clinical trials and the mentorship of senior team members.
- Support machine learning efforts from data preparation to analyses of model training and deployment.
- Learn code development and maintenance and understand professional governance and review policies.
- Engage in team meetings and training sessions to improve machine learning and coding skills, and receive regular professional development feedback.
Program Highlights
- Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
- Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
- A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required)
Required Education: Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree (enrolled student)
Required Majors: Degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, bioinformatics, engineering, or a related field
Required skills:
- Strong software development skills in Python
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn libraries such as: PyTorch, TensorFlow, PyG, or DGL.
- Proactive Learning: Demonstrates a willingness to actively learn about new state-of-the-art methods and engage with existing codebases, supported by team members.
- Resourcefulness: Ability to quickly assimilate new information to perform assigned tasks effectively.
- Basic understanding or willingness to learn about Linux OS commands and tools such as Conda, Docker, or Singularity.
- Excellent communication, technical collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.
- Familiarity with or interest in applying image processing methods to biomedical images. Any experience or knowledge of utilizing acceleration hardware would be beneficial.
- Exposure to or eagerness to learn about training and evaluating deep learning models using cloud-managed services such as AWS or GCP.
- Any prior experience or coursework involving MLops tools or involvement in projects with large-scale data or model implementations, like Large Language Models, would be a plus.
Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $22.00- $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
