Johns Hopkins University – Research Technologist Vacancy
The Department of Medicine – Infectious Diseases is seeking a Research Technologist and this position is available in the Siliciano Laboratory. The Siliciano laboratory studies the mechanism of persistence in HIV-1 infection. Despite the remarkable efficacy of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV-1 infection remains incurable with ART alone. This is due to viral persistence in stable reservoirs, the best understood of which is a latent reservoir in resting CD4+ T cells.
The latent reservoir in resting CD4+ T cells is the major barrier to cure and is the focus of our laboratory’s research efforts. We have recently demonstrated that most of the cells in the reservoir are generated by the proliferation of previously infected cells rather than de novo infection of CD4+ T cells. In addition, we have shown that the latent reservoir is dominated by large clones of infected cells which wax and wane over time. We have also developed a more accurate method of measuring the HIV-1 reservoir that separately quantitates intact and defective proviruses
