Job Opening: Microbiologist II
Location: Harlingen, TX
Department: South Texas Laboratory – Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)
Job Type: Full-time | Regular | Day Shift
Salary Range: $4,539.50 – $5,175.03 per month
Closing Date: March 6, 2025
Job Responsibilities
As a Microbiologist II, you will:
- Perform AFB smear and culture testing for tuberculosis detection.
- Use advanced laboratory techniques, including NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).
- Analyze and report results using LabWare PHLIMS.
- Maintain quality control (QC) standards and participate in proficiency testing programs.
- Work with specialized equipment like Biological Safety Cabinets, centrifuges, and BACTEC/MGIT technology.
- Ensure proper safety protocols when handling highly infectious agents.
- Prepare buffer solutions, stains, and culture media.
- Ship infectious agents in compliance with certification standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Experience in microbiology, mycobacteriology, or clinical lab testing.
- Ability to perform high-complexity laboratory tests.
Preferred Experience:
- 2+ years in a clinical microbiology or mycobacteriology lab.
- Experience with preventative maintenance, quality control, and proficiency testing.
- Familiarity with tuberculosis testing procedures.
- Skills in DNA technology and molecular microbiology techniques.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid Class C Texas driver’s license (or equivalent).
