Microbiology Intern

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role, Microbiology Intern, are to:

  • Provide technical contributions to accelerate trait discovery efforts in a fast-paced corporate research environment;
  • Report to the team lead or a research scientist to complete projects and core responsibilities as well as receives general direction and mentorship;
  • Carry out various components of microbiology and/or metagenomic experiments which include Preparing media, isolating and culturing microbes and/or microbial communities using selection, preparation and submission of nucleic acids for sequencing, and using existing data and literature to innovate these processes;
  • Analyze experimental outputs and provide suggestions for follow-up experiments based on data and current literature;
  • Conduct work in a manner compliant with safety and stewardship regulations;
  • Communicate research findings through presentations, reports, and/or email updates;
  • Prepare and present a final research talk, and accompanying technical documentation, on the work conducted during the internship.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree or Ph.D program.;
  • Educational preparation or applied experience in Biology, Microbiology, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Agronomy, Crop Science, or related field of study;
  • Ability to build relationships and work well in a team-based environment;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization;
  • Self-motivated with a strong results orientation and the desire to innovate;
  • Demonstrated ability to design and complete experimentation, manage a deadline, and focus on details;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to organize (thoughts, data, etc.);
  • Excellent computer skills related to data acquisition and record keeping;
  • Demonstrated leadership ability;
  • Desire to learn, willingness to ask questions, and ability to adapt to change;
  • Experience in microbiological sterile technique, the culture/isolation of bacteria or fungi, DNA extraction and metagenomic methods;
  • Experience with scientific data analysis and management software.
