Job Title: Associate Scientist – Rare Disease Research
Location Watertown, MA
The Position
The Associate Scientist, Rare Disease Research, will provide hands-on research-based support for drug discovery programs that aim to develop therapeutics to treat patients with rare diseases. This will be achieved by independently designing, executing and analyzing experiments for a specific project. The associate Scientist will have technology expertise to provide guidance to other scientists in the team. The Associate Scientist will be key to promotes best practices in the laboratory and implement processes according to safety requirements or research activities.
Relationships
Reports to the VP, Rare Disease Research, Boston; Dotted line to Senior Director Rare Endocrine Disorders. Internal relationships include working closely with members of the Boston team (chemistry and DMPK); & frequent interaction with colleagues in Denmark.
Essential Functions
- Works independently to design and execute on routine and non-routine sets of experiments with minimal supervision. Manages personal timelines to meet deadlines for the project with input from manager
- Identifies technical issues and devise appropriate solutions with guidance from manager.
- Implement existing procedures with innovative ideas to reduce cost and time for the projects
- Makes independent decisions related to day to day experimental activities
- Work with little supervision for most tasks of moderate complexity, with limited supervision for more complex tasks
- Analyzes and clearly communicates complex data and makes recommendations for next steps
- Takes ownership for technical aspects of project related to discipline & influences other team members
- May present ideas or data to team, site, or global project team
- Document experimental data in electronic notebooks in timely fashion. Contributes to study protocols and study reports with supervision
- Mentors junior staff and promotes cross-functional team work
Physical Requirements
0-10% overnight travel required. Ability to lift 0-50 lbs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in life sciences with a minimum of 4 years of industry experience; More advanced degree may substitute for experience as appropriate
- Relevant hands-on experience in in vitro culture of non-immune primary cells and rare disease research
- Track record of successful assay development for early drug discovery projects
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment are required
