What you will do:
The R & D Intern is responsible to help design, execute, and analyze all Tillamook products and will assist with Continuous Improvements across Tillamook’s portfolio: Cheese, Butter, Whey, Cultured and Frozen Desserts. Interns can effectively create experiments of design and perform risk analysis mitigation strategies with minimal assistance.
Here’s a day in the life:
- Develops a basic background in the food sciences to create superior dairy products and improve process outcomes
- Tests new products in R&D lab and develop specific processing methods for plant trials, and confers with process engineers, flavor experts, and packaging and marketing specialists to resolve problems
- Builds strong relationships and efforts with product development, suppliers, vendors, supply chain, engineering, sensory, manufacturing, marketing, and outside R&D teams
- Continues learning and sharing new skills and knowledge of the latest ingredients and technology that is applicable for ice cream and dairy products
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Ideal candidates will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a Food Science, Culinary Science, or related field – dairy science a strong plus
- Some experience in a science and/or culinary field(s), including experience in production and/or quality environments. Product development and/or dairy industry experience a strong plus
- Basic background in food sciences, GMPs, and understanding of business operations
- Experience writing technical papers and is comfortable using journals and online resources to do research
- Basic understanding of formulation, and financial calculations. Drives NPD projects which are assigned directly to them and engages with mentors and leaders to ensure that correct process, risk mitigation, PM tools, and next steps occur
- Understanding Sensory and ingredient use as a roll of consumer expectation
- Active monitoring, communicating, and driving an agenda by assigned project
- Operate with moderate supervision, potentially remote
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Intermediate knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Requires commitment to objectives of the organization
- Computer skills, including skills in the Microsoft suite of applications.
- Math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), and can speak and understand the English language
- Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work and recognizes logical next steps with active stakeholders to proactively engage them
- Ability to present findings to peers and leader of functional department and good external technical communication, experience writing technical papers a plus
- Act as one team, and comfortable interacting with peers
- Good basic oral and written communications abilities
