University of Tennessee Hiring The person in this position will work with a team of scientists within the Department of Animal Science focused on improving the health, welfare, and productive efficiency of food animals. The selected applicant will be responsible for performing research implementing cellular and molecular methods to include activities such as RNA/DNA isolation, quantitative PCR, DNA polymorphism analysis, cell culture, ELISAs and other biochemical assays. The selected applicant will aid in identifying, developing, and executing methods to accomplish the overall goals of labs primarily focused on immunology, microbiology, and genetic research questions. Successful candidates also will have the willingness and ability to summarize data, aid in interpretations, and develop materials for publication. The selected applicant will serve as the lab manager, train student workers, and supervise lab activities. Applicants should demonstrate a positive attitude, the ability to work effectively in a team and independently, effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to multi-task.

Required Qualifications: A Bachelor of Science degree in animal science, microbiology, veterinary science, biology, or other natural, life or health care science and 2 years relevant experience. Proficient in computer programs such as Excel and Word. Ability to compile information into report formats. Detail oriented, well organized, willingness to learn, and ability to communicate effectively.
Preferred Qualifications: Master of Science in animal science, microbiology, veterinary science, biology or other natural, life or health care science. Prior experience with in vitro culture systems, molecular biology techniques, DNA/RNA isolation, qPCR, and genotyping. Ability and willingness to work with food animals. Prior experience with fluorescent staining and microscopy. Knowledge of bioinformatic processes required to prepare and analyze data relative to gene and/or protein expression. Ability or willingness to learn to analyze small and large data sets using advanced software such as SAS or R.

Job Functions:
Laboratory Experiments
- Process blood, tissue, and other samples
- Isolate DNA/RNA from various sources
- Conduct experiments for faculty including, but not limited to, in vitro culture, in vivo systems, PCR, RT-qPCR, genotyping, ELISAs, fluorescent staining and microscopy, and Western blotting.
- Operate lab equipment.
- Prepare culture media, reagents, buffers, solutions, etc.
- Write technical standard operating procedures.
Data management, analysis, and summarization
- Execute activities of research projects as planned in a timely manner.
- Record observations and scientific findings
- Organize and maintain data records.
- Analyze and summarize collected data.
- Prepare research reports using tables, graphs, charts, PowerPoint, and word documents.
- Assists with manuscript preparation for publication such as proofing and writing.
Lab Management
- Track use of lab supplies and orders as needed.
- Manage supply budgets.
- Consult with vendors.
- Conduct basic lab safety checks.
- Maintain lab cleanliness.
Technical Support and training
- Provide technical support to faculty and students.
- Provide technical training for students and other personnel in the lab.
Supervision & other duties
- Supervise lab activities.
- Undergraduate students – set schedules, assign work, and approve time sheets as needed.
- Participate in research meetings.
